Want to know how to keep your flowers fresh in Summer?

This week, Britain is set to reach the highest temperatures in over 90 years. Us humans will deal with these sizzling temperatures by sitting in front of air conditioning units, drinking lots of cold water or, for the fortunate few, cooling down in a pool.

But what about your flowers? In this post we’ll take you through the ways in which you can keep flowers fresh in Summer.

1. Warm water

Keep your flowers hydrated by placing your stems in lukewarm water as this will allow them to absorb the moisture more quickly than cold water.

2. Trim stems

Trim 4 cm from the base of the stem to remove any bacteria build-up or blockages.

This will create a fresh and more porous area which will water to be more easily absorbed.

3. Antibacterial

Bacteria builds up faster within dirty vases during the summer months, so make sure that you thoroughly clean your vase every two or three days using antibacterial wash.

Don’t leave any leaves or petals in the water as these will rot, causing your flowers to wilt.

4. Cool shade

Keep your flowers in the shade. Direct sunlight can result in evaporation of the water in the vase, leaving your blooms and stems thirsty.

It can also cause the petals on your flowers to burn. Place your flowers in a cool room away from direct sunlight.

5. Flowers hate draughts

When a heatwave strikes, we all do our best to bring the temperature in our homes down by opening windows and doors or even putting on the aircon.

However, flowers do not like draughts, therefore it’s best to place them away from any draughts and breezes.

6. Vase size

It’s important to choose the right size of vase for your flowers. If the opening is too narrow, the stems might be squished together, causing them to rot.

Either remove some of the stems to create a smaller bunch, or find a larger vase to utilize.

On the other hand, If the mouth of your vase is too wide, the arrangement will not have any form or shape.
