If you've recently ordered or received a bouquet of peonies and noticed that the flowers look like tight, green golf balls rather than fluffy clouds, don't panic! This is actually the ultimate sign of premium quality and peak freshness.

At LOV Flowers, our peonies are intentionally harvested and delivered while they are still closed in bud. This careful timing protects the delicate petals during transit and allows you to experience the true magic of watching them transform right before your eyes at home.

Is It Normal for Peonies to Arrive Closed?

Absolutely. In fact, professional florists and high-end flower growers actively avoid buying fully open peonies.

While a completely open peony looks breathtaking on display at a local market, it is incredibly fragile. Shipping an open flower is a major risk, as the giant, heavy flower heads are easily bruised, torn, or crushed in boxes. Furthermore, an open peony has already used up its energy—meaning its days on your table are numbered.

By delivering peonies in bud, we ensure they are:

  • Incredibly hardy: Protected from bruising and heat stress during transit.

  • Longer lasting: You get the absolute maximum vase life, usually lasting between 5 to 10 days.

  • Fascinating to watch: You get to enjoy the full lifecycle of the bloom, which often doubles or triples in size as it wakes up.

The "Marshmallow Test": How to Spot a Healthy Bud

Many customers worry that a tight bud is "dud" and will never open. Florists have a quick, foolproof trick to check if a peony is ready to bloom, known as the marshmallow test.

How to do it:

  • Gently squeeze the sides of the round bud between your thumb and forefinger.
  • If it feels rock-hard like a marble,it was cut a fraction too early and will need extra time to wake up.
  • If it feels soft, pillowy, and slightly squishy—exactly like a marshmallow—it is perfectly primed and will begin unfolding within 24 to 72 hours.

What Are Guard Petals? (And Why They Might Look Torn)

When your peonies arrive, you might notice that the very outermost petals look slightly dark, green-streaked, or slightly crumpled. Don't worry—these aren't damaged or dead petals!

These are guard petals. Nature designs them to act as a protective suit of armor for the delicate, silky inner layers while the bud is growing in the field. Once the flower is safely in your vase, you can gently peel these outer guard petals off if you prefer a cleaner look, though many flower lovers keep them for a rustic, garden-fresh aesthetic.

Need Them to Bloom Faster? The Acceleration Routine

If you are hosting a dinner party tonight or need your peonies fully open for a weekend event, you can safely fast-track the blooming process using temperature and light.

1.Give them a fresh, warm cut:Unlock the water channels.

Trim 2-3 cm off the stems at a sharp 45-degree angle. Place them into a clean vase filled with lukewarm water (not boiling!). Warm water flows up the stem faster than cold water, signaling the bud to open.

2.Move them to a warm, bright room:Signal the bloom.

Place the vase in a warm room that gets plenty of indirect sunlight. Sunlight and ambient warmth act as nature’s alarm clock for peonies. Avoid placing them directly on hot radiators, which will dehydrate them.

3.Gently massage or peel the buds:Clear the path.

If the bud is stuck, it might be held back by natural sticky saps. Gently wipe the bud with a warm, damp cloth, or carefully peel away the tough outer guard petals to help the inner ruffles break free.

The Joy of the Journey

One of the reasons peonies are the nation's favorite flower is the pure drama of their transformation. Watching a tight, solid green ball swell up, blush with color, and gradually ripple out into a massive, heavily scented masterpiece over three days is a joy you don't get with standard shop-bought flowers.
